The college recruiting process
Recruiting is a series of conversations and evaluations—not one moment or one message.
Players explore schools while coaches evaluate academic readiness, athletic ability and roster needs. This guide outlines common stages, but the order and pace vary by program, division and player.

Six stages to understand
1. Build your foundation
Keep up with coursework, develop your football skills and gather accurate player information. Talk with your school counselor about academic requirements and your high school coach about your current development.
2. Research college programs
Consider academic interests, location, cost, team culture and competitive level. Build a range of options rather than focusing only on a school's name or reputation.
3. Introduce yourself
Use official recruiting questionnaires and verified coaching contacts. Send a concise introduction with your graduation year, position, school, contact information and accessible film link.
4. Learn how evaluation works
Coaches may review film, academics and player information or evaluate athletes at permitted events. Ask what additional information they need. Camps can support evaluation, but attendance does not guarantee recruitment.
5. Explore visits and conversations
When visits are permitted, ask about academics, daily team life, support resources and roster expectations. Clarify whether a visit is official or unofficial and who is responsible for expenses.
6. Compare options and confirm details
Review admission, eligibility, team opportunities and the full cost of attendance. Understand any written aid terms and required steps before making a decision. Continue meeting academic and team responsibilities afterward.
Keep the signals in perspective
Interest is not the same as an offer
A questionnaire, camp invitation or coach conversation may show interest, but it does not establish admission, a roster place or financial aid. Ask directly what the communication means and what remains to be decided.
Rules and timelines differ
Contact periods, visit rules, eligibility standards and aid policies depend on the governing body and program. Check current official NCAA, NAIA or NJCAA guidance as appropriate, and confirm school-specific requirements.
Fit matters beyond football
Consider your intended studies, campus support, coaching environment and costs after aid. Ask about renewal conditions and what happens if your athletic role changes. No recruiting step guarantees a scholarship or placement.
Turn information into a next step.
